BSc/MSc Thesis
Interested in writing a thesis in geomorphology?
Then contact the potential supervisors (Joachim Götz, Klaus-Martin Moldenhauer, Oliver Sass) directly - we appreciate your interest.
Theses are usually empirical, i.e. with own data collection and analysis. Pure literature theses are the exception.
Please consider the following aspects in advance:
Basic framework:
- When do you want to start, when do you want/need to be finished?
- Which methodological approaches would you like to focus on - field work, laboratory work, software/GIS-supported analyses?
- Would you like to work in the Alps or do you have the necessary mountain experience?
- Do you have a driver's license so that you could reach research areas that are not accessible by public transport by car?
The answers to these questions help to rule out certain subject areas (e.g. it is not possible to carry out field work in the Alps in three months).
Possible subject areas:
The topic should be within one of the research areas covered by our chair (self-conceived “freelance topics” are usually not viable):
- Sediment deposition in floodplains (e.g. exploratory drilling, laboratory work, geophysics, relief analysis, partly in collaboration with historians) (JG, KMM, OS)
- Suspended load transport in rivers (currently Truppach and Eger: probe installation, key date measurements, data evaluation, relief analysis) (JG, OS)
- Weathering and microclimate on rock faces (e.g. rock moisture and temperature measurement, precipitation measurement, laser scanning, infrared thermography...) (OS)
- Laboratory work on rock weathering (e.g. climate chamber experiments) and measurements/data evaluation on our geo-test wall (geoelectrics, microwave sensors, etc.) (OS)
- Influence of vegetation on rock moisture and weathering on rock faces and monuments (partly in collaboration with disturbance ecology and sports ecology) (OS)
- Alpine sediment dynamics, mostly in the Berchtesgaden National Park (e.g. laser scanning, drone-based monitoring, geophysics, passive seismics, rockfall monitoring, remote sensing, etc.) (JG)
- Pleistocene and Holocene landscape development in northeast Bavaria (terrain/GIS) (KMM)
- Various topics related to projects on society-environment relationships (KMM, OS)
Practical advice:
You will need a second corrector for each paper. This person is usually determined together with the first supervisor.
